City of Saint John

The City of Saint John’s process of continuous improvement, called Vision 2015 Program of Excellence, is underway. This program is a multi-year undertaking of planning, projects, and change strategy designed to set a clear and attainable course of action to align the services delivered by the City of Saint John to community goals and objectives.

The Vision 2015 project is using a top down approach to planning. Our planning decisions will flow from a vision that is community owned and developed. It is important that our plans to achieve this vision provide a balance between the social, governance, economic, and environmental needs of our community.

In terms of community impact, Vision 2015 is significant. When completed, the City of Saint John’s governance model will support the achievement of the community vision. Programs and services offered by the City of Saint John will be determined by the value they provide to our citizens in meeting their needs and the fit with strategic direction. The efficiency and effectiveness of every service will be measured and reported to the community. Saint John will be a sustainable community and we will ensure the way we are meeting our needs today does not jeopardize the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

This is an exciting project for our community and we have made a lot of progress. We are currently developing a community vision as well as goals through a widespread public consultation process. This will be wrapped up in the fall of 2007. A new governance model, based upon the needs of the community, will be presented to Saint John Common Council. City services have been thoroughly examined and defined using a standard methodology. The value of the services to the community has been identified. We have developed a set of sustainability principles which will help to guide our decision making process in the future. Finally, we have put together a planning framework to translate our vision into action.
